Paris Passes on Rental Scooters

 

People in Paris, France, have voted against rented e-scooters. As of September, the two-wheeled machines will be gone from the City of Light.

프랑스 파리의 사람들은 전기스쿠터 대여에 반대표를 던졌다. 9월부터 이륜차는 빛의 도시에서 사라질 것이다.

 

Last month, a citywide vote asked Parisians if they wanted rented e-scooters to stay or go. Just over 103,000 people voted. And 89% voted against the e-scooters. Only 11% supported them.

Electric scooters are now common in many cities. Riders use an app to rent one. They can pick up and leave scooters anywhere. That has caused problems.

So has careless driving of the scooters. In Paris, two people often ride a single scooter. That is against city rules. So is riding scooters on sidewalks. But people do it anyway.

The scooters can travel fast. Scooter riders have caused hundreds of crashes in Paris.

“People don’t pay attention to how they ride,” said Hila Charon. She likes to walk around Paris. “It’s very dangerous, and to see these scooters on the ground everywhere all the time … I’m very happy that everyone voted against them.”

The Flip Side

Some people do love e-scooters. The rentals don’t cost much. They are easy to find. They are fast and fun. Young people and tourists like them.

“It’s fast, and it’s easy, and it’s cool,” said Swiss tourist Ler Detelj.

There are three main rental companies in Paris: Dott, Lime, and TIER. Their contracts with the city run out at the end of August.

The companies said that not many people voted on the scooters. There are about 1.38 million voters in Paris.

“The result is based on only around 100,000 … votes,” said Florian Anders, who works for TIER.

The companies said the one-day vote wasn’t easy for people. There was no online voting. There weren’t many places to vote.

The scooter companies tried offering free rides to the polls. They pushed their case on social media. Last year, 71% of Parisian scooter riders were younger than 35. The companies hoped young people would turn out and vote.

Scoot Over

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo was happy with the vote. She had hoped to get rid of the rental scooters before next year’s Paris Olympics.

There are about 15,000 self-service rental scooters in Paris.
